The Alaska cruise season is about to start
I took Bella and Tucker to Skagway and Dyea yesterday. While I’m going to write up a fairly lengthy post to describe this spectacular day, I’m going to start with this brief one, which is basically a post I made on the Alaska Cruise Lovers group on Facebook, with a specific focus.
The first cruise ship of the season, the Norwegian Bliss, arrives in Skagway in just 6 days! (see the year’s calendar here) Here’s what the Skagway area looked like yesterday. I hope that the folks booked on the Bliss have lots of warm clothes – despite yesterday’s glorious sun, it’s still Winter here.
On my drive south I hadn’t been thinking about how close the cruise season is, and was surprised to see the White Pass & Yukon Route railway line at Log Cabin plowed and about ready for trains to start.

The South Klondike Highway, looking south from near Log Cabin. For some reason I never get bored with this road even after driving it several hundred times 🙂

Broadway in Skagway was buzzing with activity, with many stores being worked on and stocked up.

The White Pass & Yukon Route railway Shops was all fired up and ready for action. A lot of smoke was coming from one locomotive being awakened from its Winter rest as I passed.

I used to often go to Skagway to see the first cruise ship arrive. Maybe I can do it again this year…
I am with you – every trip you must see a variation in the weather, snow pack, flora, fauna, your interest on the day, etc. Spectacular. Those first RR journeys must be a huge treat as well for all the high country winter like vistas.
Yes, the drive is different each and every time. The WP&YR used to offer a great deal for Yukoners to ride the train from Skagway to Fraser – if they do it this year I’ll be on it again, for the 20th time or so.
