Various hikes at Terra Nova National Park

On the second half of Sunday, June 21st, Cathy and I did a couple of short hikes near the park Visitor Centre, then went through the Visitor Centre to see the displays. Finally, late that evening, I went for a look at the Newman Sound Campground end of the Coastal Trail.

We started with the Heritage Trail, an easy 500-meter trail with very good interpretive signs describing the various jobs that needed to be done in each season.

Next, we decided to have a brief look at this part of the Coastal Trail.

I would like to see much more of it.

This portrait shows a Ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) – the black ring near the end of the beak being the identifier.

The Visitor Centre isn’t large but has some excellent displays.

I was particularly interested in a canoe that had been built using traditional tools and methods.

A lot of hours were clearly put into this project.

Sea-creature touch-tanks always attract a lot of attention. I just look and take pictures.

Back at our campsite, at 8pm I decided that I wanted to hike the Coastal Trail to Pissamare Falls the next day, but I couldn’t figure out how to get to the trail, so I would go for a wander and do that tonight.

My first stop was at a couple of fenced-off areas where native aspen, birch, and maple trees have been planted. Once they’re large enough, they’ll be replanted out among the black spruce that are the dominant species now. A forest made up entirely of mature black spruce is not a very healthy system, and the attempt is being made to change that.

I took a roundabout route, but eventually found myself on the Campground Trail which looked like it would take me in the right direction.

There we go – the start of the Coastal Trail. Maybe I’d just go down it a bitโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™‚

What a great place for performances on a warm evening.

There were some stairs but the trail is mostly natural.

Some sections had lots of flowers.

I went as far as Sandy Point, an old logging camp site 2.2 km from our RV. It was now 8:35 and it would be getting dark soon.

I had the trail to myself, but only stopped for this photo and one other one on the way back.

I didn’t come down those stairs ahead, but they were the shortcut back to the RV, and I’d go down them in the morning.

This was a truly excellent day, and I went to bed looking forward to the morning hike to the waterfall.
