Bringing the old blog into the new world.
For many months I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the old blog that got hacked and wasn’t recoverable (it’s a long sad story). A couple of days ago, I came up with the only reasonable plan – hugely time-consuming but it will get it where I want it.
My first blog was on April 25, 2006 (!). This is the 1,224th post since then, and my first job in the rebuild was to compile a complete list of all the posts. Among the vast changes in website design in the past 15 years ago is the size of photos that are reasonable to use. When I first started, photos were 300 pixels wide. Then for many years they were 631 pixels wide, and now they’re 990 pixels wide. The 300 and 990 sizes are seen below.
Because of that difference in image sizes, I hadn’t been happy with the old blog in quite some time. I’ve now made the decision to re-format all the old posts to the new standard. It’s a massive job that may actually never get completed, so I’m starting by adding posts that are personally meaningful, then posts that are part of my hiking guides, then the earliest posts. Then come the other many hundreds.
In May 2006 I moved the blog from a WordPress account to my own server. Here is what that original blog on my server looked like. One of the many changes in the way I write the blog is that I now avoid subjects like the one below. There are enough places to get bad news, I don’t need to be one of them.

Happy New Year
Thank you for taking on the challenge of rebuilding your blog. It has been missed, especially when trying to point people on TA to good info about the Yukon.
I googled for info on the grades for the road to Bella Coola thinking it was on the blog. That information is still available so I was wondering if it was only the blog part was hacked and the guide info was isolated so survived?
Wishing you good health.
Thank you, Conrad – I hope 2021 is good to you. Luckily it was “only” the blog that got hit – the 7,000+ pages on the main website were untouched. The blog needed to be rebuilt – I hadn’t been happy with the small photos for a very long time – but it’s a huge job. The silver lining is that re-reading every one of the 1,225 posts is very enjoyable 🙂
