This was the weather we dream about

On a scale of 1 to 10, today rated 11 – it was incredible. The temperature hit the high 20s C (low 80s F), and there were no clouds, no bugs and no wind. This is the day I’ll dream about in the middle of our next winter – one day like this is worth putting up with a lot of ugly ones. Today was a day made for a drive to Skagway 🙂

The first photo was shot at the Bove Island viewpoint – aptly-named Windy Arm was like a mirror, not a common occurrence.

There were 4 large cruise ships in Skagway, resulting in a fair bit of traffic on the highway. I’ve never understood why most of the motorcoaches travel in a pack and jam up stops like this – somewhere in there is the “Welcome to Yukon” sign. By this point I’d met 3 small independent buses, each travelling alone and giving their passengers a much more pleasant, more Northern experience.

This young brown-phase black bear (“cinnamon bear”) was just north of Log Cabin. His behaviour made it clear that he’s been fed by some people passing by. Folks, this is very bad for the bears and often results in them being killed. Please Dont Feed the Bears (the people in this Sourdough rental car didn’t).

In the White Pass, Bernard Lake is still partly frozen and Summit Lake is completely frozen, even with the temperature nearing 80 degrees.

It sure looks like Winter up there!

After a lunch of halibut and chips at the Skagway Fish Company I went for a wander among the small boats. The Small Boat Harbor was quiet – surprising on a day like this.

One last stop before clearing Customs at Fraser.
