The natural gas pipeline – friend or foe???
Members of the Alaska House of Representatives voted yesterday to approve an exclusive state license for TransCanada Gas to move ahead with the studies preparatory to building a natural gas pipeline down the Alaska Highway to Alberta. It still has to pass the Senate, but this vote was a major move down the Alaska Highway route.
If a pipeline is built along that route (or even studied in great detail) the impact on Whitehorse (and many other communities) will be huge, and the impact will not all be positive. Anyone who was in Fairbanks after the oil pipeline construction boom knows what I mean. The city was a mess, physically and socially, and is still recovering. While Cathy and I stand to benefit hugely from the skyrocketing house prices that will result as soon as construction begins, I don’t want our territory and/or city ruined.
