The perfect storm at Carcross

Brief, violent storms are pretty rare in the Yukon, particularly in the winter. Yesterday, though, Cathy and I witnessed “the perfect storm”, Yukon style. Part of what made it perfect was our vantage point, as you’ll see from the series of photos below.

Below, the storm approaches at 6:29 p.m., coming down Lake Bennett like a wall – we could hear the wind screaming in the distance though it was almost calm at the cabin.

Below, at 6:36 the storm hit the shore. Our cabin is in a somewhat sheltered bay and our wind reading only hit 32km/h, but on the main beach winds appeared to be in the 80km/h range.

At 6:42 the village had all but disappeared in the blizzard, though the wind had dropped a bit. At about this time, we could just barely make out a snowmobile heading out onto the lake, and couldn’t make any sense of why he would do that except to help people he knew were out there in the storm.

By 6:58, the guy on the snowmobile had assembled his gear and was kite-skiing!

By 7:35 the storm was gone, replaced by this gorgeous sky. The perfect ending to a perfect storm!
