Off on tour – next stop Dawson City
I’m off on tour in a couple of hours – we’ll be in Seward, Alaska 11 days from now and then after my group boards the Celebrity Millennium for a cruise to Vancouver it will take me a couple of days to get back to Whitehorse.
I’m guiding this tour for Maher Tours of Wellington, New Zealand. The Maher family and I have been together for a long time – this is about the 13th year I’ve been doing their Yukon/Alaska tour. We’ve gone through 3 coach companies in that time – Norline, Premier Alaska and now Ruby Range Adventure. As they move, I’ve moved with them, as driver/guide with Norline and Ruby Range, as just guide with Premier Alaska.
I met my group of 12 at the Whitehorse airport yesterday afternoon when they arrived from Vancouver. The first order for the visit was food as they hadn’t eaten since their very early breakfast, so we went downtown for a bite, then over to the historic sternwheeler SS Klondike for a tour. Ruby Range has given me their best coach, a 2011 Ford/Goshen, which was a nice surprise.
While the group was touring the paddlewheeler, I took their luggage over to the Westmark. When I got back, I was pleased to find Daphne Mennell painting as part of the Yukon Plein Air Art Festival.
Although the salmon won’t arrive for another 2-3 weeks, I also stopped at the Whitehorse Fishway as part of my city tour. The staff there did an excellent tour.
A look at the longest wooden fish ladder in the world. The Yukon River is at maximum flow right now and both the spillways and the rapids were impressive.
Time to finish packing and get everything in order for the day. The weather forecast shows a bit of everything for our route to Dawson City today. Dawson is getting very heavy rain this morning but that’s supposed to stop before we arrive. Fingers crossed, off we go!
