Digging my way into Spring

This time of year, I start digging through the snow looking for Spring. Well actually I go looking for bare ground – the sun now has enough heat to warm the ground and get things dried out and growing weeks earlier than if I let Mother Nature do her thing.

The plow on my truck doesn’t have enough weight on it to dig right down to the gravel so by the end of the winter there’s a layer of hard-packed snow a few inches thick to get rid of. Last year I didn’t do this and the top end of the driveway was a slop-hole for about 3 weeks. This picture was taken on March 26 – the driveway has been dry ever since. This is also a great way to get rid of the bulge that seems to appear around the beltline some winters!

Extreme gardening! Yesterday the sun was so warm I was outside most of the day – one of the things I got done was getting my new ornamental cherry trees some sun. I find this sort of work very therapeutic – good head-clearing exercise in the sun. The temperature hit +5°C (41°F) for an hour or so.

Kayla and Monty are enjoying the sun as much as I am – the only difference is that they find the highest snowbank around to lounge on 🙂 This one that Kayla is enjoying is the favourite, but Monty was out exploring.
