A history & nature day

The day up Montana Mountain with Bob was excellent – even the weather cooperated. I’ve only ever shown a handful of people I trust the campsite seen in the first photo below. This is probably the most pristine century-old campsite in the Yukon – almost everything is there, from kitchen utensils to ore assaying equipment. The best part is that I know whose campsite it is – his name, why he was there in 1901 and why he abandoned the camp virtually intact. I took Bob there a few years ago, and he was as captivated by it this time as he was before – it’s a very special place indeed for those with a heart for history.

We were really hoping to see a grizzly this trip, but no luck. Just as we were topping the last hill before heading back to the cabin, though, the fine young bull caribou below came into view. We parked the Tracker and were able to get within about 100 feet of him. See more Alaska-Yukon caribou photos here.
