High country ‘Horse – Mt. McIntyre
Today may well have been the last warmish day for a very long time, and it was a great day to get into the high country above Whitehorse again. Mount McIntyre was today’s destination – with a side trip down to Fish Lake afterward, the whole adventure only took 4½ hours. I saw one other vehicle as I was coming down the mountain, but other than that I was alone for the whole time. Well, alone except for my furry buddies, of course 🙂
Mount McIntyre is really easy to get to, but unlike the other two main high-country roads in Whitehorse, this one calls for a 4×4 – you might get up in a car, but you’ll be white-knuckling it in a few sections of the road where it’s steep and loose, or needs extra clearance to get over rocks. The road is rough enough that I swapped cars with Cathy today – she took the Outback to work and I had the Tracker to explore with.
Most people stop at the aircraft navigation facility at the top, but we went for another couple of kilometers or so on a route that’s 4×4-only (the photo below was taken about half-way along that route). It isn’t any more spectacular, but the lack of a road gives it a more wilderness feel, and even with a chilly breeze it was a superb place to go for a walk.
