Where’s global warming when you need it?

I’m getting soft. Too much time in Whitehorse with a well-insulated house, propane heat and a cozy spa-for-2 will do that, I suppose. Our 6 Northstay guests arrive from Nova Scotia tomorrow, so all the furkids and I are at the cabin and Cathy is in Ontario visiting family and friends.

It’s now 05:00 and I’ve been up since 03:20 feeding the woodstove. This old place warms up well on a normal winter day, but it doesn’t handle wind well at all, and is it windy! There’s been a heavy North wind for the past couple of days, although it’s dropping in the past half-hour. An hour ago my Davis Vantage Pro weather station was reporting -26 outside with 20km winds and a windchill of -36C. The picture shows what my “office” looks like in those conditions.

A very cold morning inside my Carcross cabin

It’s warmed up to +12 inside now, but Jasper, the cat behind me, is still not happy. The forecast tonight was for a low of -38, but I see that it’s just been changed to -36 – with no wind, that’ll be just fine.

Those of you in warmer climes might wonder about a couple of things in the photo. The extension cord is to plug in my car so it’ll start (the truck has been plugged in since yesterday). The toilet paper is on the desk staying warm and dry, because the outhouse is filling up with drifting snow – the styrofoam toilet seat, which makes that visit bearable at any temperature, is beside the stove – aaaaaah! 🙂

When the sun comes up (just before 8:00) the first job will be to fire the truck up and get the driveway plowed. The photo below shows what it looked like yesterday morning, and it’ll be a lot worse now. The Outback slammed through those drifts with only a little hesitation – I get more impressed with this car all the time 🙂
