The Yukon Quest – GO Huskies!!
Yesterday was the start of the Yukon Quest, our 1,000-mile sled dog race that runs from Whitehorse to Fairbanks. This was a particularly exciting one for me, mostly because it’s the first time since 2003 that I’ve been able to attend (in previous years I’ve been out of town on bus charters), but also because the weather was perfect – no clouds and about -20°C (-4°F). I felt good, too – a huge bonus.
This is truly Whitehorse at its finest – glorious weather and scenery combined with an exciting event packed with people from all over the world. Here are a few photos from the 300+ I shot. The race start is in downtown Whitehorse, right at First & Main. We started a few blocks away at Shipyards Park for the easy parking, worked our way slowly up to the starting line, then headed up the highway to the Takhini River Bridge, where the trail leaves the Yukon River.

This is the mouth of the Takhini River where it empties into the Yukon, which has carved out those impressive “clay cliffs”.
