The “best beaches” watch

I’m always on the lookout for articles about, and photos of, great beaches – and there are lots. Condé Nast Traveler has just posted “Great Beaches of the World: Italy” so it looked like a good way to start this snowy day off. The first thing I checked out was the slide show, and slide #2 was…

I almost went elsewhere – anyone who considers that anything but a desperation beach has nothing to say that I’m interested in hearing! But I did go to the main article anyway, and found what I was looking for (though without photos). Among the recommendations:

Some of the most beautiful patches of aquamarine sea and white sand on the whole Italian peninsula are within sight of the watchtowers, castles, and stone villages of Puglia’s coast, which defines the heel of Italy’s boot. The region also provides a powerful visual history of each wave of invaders, from the Greeks to the Normans to the Turks. The finest stretch of beaches curls around the southernmost tip, between Otranto and Gallipoli—which happen to be two of the most atmospheric cities in Puglia.

Now we’re talking beaches! Off to Google to see what photos I can find…
