House renovations – laying the hardwood floor

I’m in the middle of the next major step in our renovation – laying several hundred square feet of walnut hardwood. We got a good deal on what we needed almost a year ago and it’s been stashed in various places around the house since then, and the air compressor and nailer were also picked up when I found good sales in Whitehorse and Calgary respectively. The 2 1/4 inch wide, 3/4 inch thick walnut is hard wood and should stand up to dogs as well as the Pergo we put in the last reno. Here are a couple of photos of the job in progress, and a couple more of the finished floor in the hall and den/office.

The carpet and underlay have been stripped out, the floor leveled with a plane and belt sander, and the chalk lines have been snapped to keep the boards straight.

The air nailer can’t get close to the walls so the hall was mostly hand work, but in large areas it’s a beautiful thing to use 🙂

The finished floor – the mouldings, which will be painted white, are yet to be re-installed, and all the doors are being replaced with white 6-panel heritage doors. As with our last renovation, everything from light switches and outlets to fixtures are being replaced. Taking a truck load of filthy 20-year-old carpet to the dump yesterday felt good. I wonder how many million plastic grocery bags you could make with that much material?
