Folks, it’s time to SLOW DOWN!

You would think that Yukoners would know how to drive on icy roads, wouldn’t you? The roads are extra-icy right now, and the number of vehicles off in the bush is amazing – people who were just driving too fast. Usually accidents here are single-car because there are few cars on the roads so there’s nobody to run into, and most of the accidents are easy to recover. Some of the many I’ve seen the past few days, however, are rollovers, and some are FAR off the road. As often as not, it’s 4×4s in the ditch, too – the Superman feeling at work. On these roads, even your car shifting gears while under power can throw you out of control (especially going up hills), so when it’s about to shift, take your foot out of it.

Edit: a couple of minutes after posting that, I got a “Breaking News” email from the Anchorage Daily News: “A head-on collision on the Seward Highway near Bird Creek this afternoon has a woman pinned in her vehicle with passers-by performing CPR on her, according to Alaska State Troopers.” Alaskans drive too fast, too (especially on that road – beautiful and deadly).
