Cruising the North Pacific on the Celebrity Infinity
I ran out of time to post this last night, so it’s now Wednesday, 15:00. It’s cloudy with a light misty rain and the sea is getting rougher. The Sapphire Princess has caught up with us and is now off our port side. We have another sea day, then get to Ketchikan Thursday morning. Having these sea days to start is a wonderfully calm way to start a vacation rather than having activity-filled port days, and seems to help give the ship a community feel.
When I wrote this post yesterday morning about 07:00 we were cruising in the sunshine across a sea with 10-foot waves driven by winds up to 15 mph. We were off the coast of Oregon, having passed Crescent City, California, at noon.
This photo was created before our small-boat tour yesterday, using a green-screen – nicely done and to us worth the $30 it cost for the package 🙂
We left the hotel yesterday morning to do some last-minute clothes shopping, and before we got back the heavens opened up with torrential rain! Luckily, it stopped before we got to the pier at 12:30, because boarding was an awful mess and we were out on the sidewalk for over half an hour.
It took over 2 hours to get aboard, but then things improved in a big hurry – the welcome-aboard glass of champagne put things off to a good start! After the 4:15 muster, we met about 20 people from CruiseCritic who I’ve been talking to online for the past few months. It was good fun and removed any doubt about whether or not this cruise would be enjoyable or not. As you can see, the sun even came out again.
Sailing from San Francisco, under the Golden Gate Bridge, was simply thrilling, a superb end to our too-short visit. This photo was taken from the front of Deck 11, location of the outdoor jogging track.
This fellow was waving to people on the viewpoint directly above him – he was talking to them on his cell phone.
Many crew members were getting photos taken of themselves as we sailed away – apparently their first San Francisco departures. It’s been a couple of years since a Celebrity ship has been here, but I’m quite certain that it will become a regular port, because everyone seems to love the place.
Sunrise off the coast of northern California just after 06:00 this morning.
The ship is rolling and bucking a fair bit. Jumping into one of the swimming pools would have been considered an extreme sport, but they were drained about an hour after I took this shot.
The view from our cabin window on Deck 3. There are a fair number of people now wearing seasickness patches, and those little airline-type bags are tucked into the railings of most stairways for those folks who still have a problem. That’s the unfortunate reality of cruising up the west coast – it can get very rough (this is far from being very rough).
