Boat tour into Kenai Fjords National Park
I’m now 2 days behind on my posts, so I’m going to post these photos with little commentary. On Tuesday we took a 6-hour boat tour into Kenai Fjords National Park, and these photos, posted in the order they were shot, show some of the highlights of the day.
The weather wasn’t looking very good as we started off.
A bit of blue sky offered some hope, but on the Alaska coast, anything can happen.
Horned puffins (Fratercula corniculata) are one of my favourite birds.
An adult male Northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) can be up to 5 feet in length and weigh 100 pounds.
Seeing orca (Orcinus orca) – some folks still use the once-common term killer whales – is always a particular highlight for me. That’s even more true when there’s a baby.
There was no need to search for or follow these whales – they came to us.
The Surprise Glacier did surprise a few people, as the focus is on Holgate Glacier straight ahead.
Holgate Glacier
Steller’s sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus).
Humpback whale.
As you can see, it was an amazing day. We had dinner in Seward before returning to Anchorage for the night.
On Wednesday, we drove from Anchorage to Healy, just north of Denali National Park. I took a handful of photos during our lunch stop in Talkeetna but I’m not going to post any. In a few minutes the day starts – the main feature being an 11-12 houre bus tour into the park.
