A tiny look at the arts in Whitehorse
Although Cathy and I are well aware that there is a lot going on in Whitehorse at any given time, we just don’t get out much, though we regret not doing so. One of the first things that impresses people about Whitehorse is the number of artists here and the quality of the work being produced, and over the past week I’ve been out to a couple of art venues that I hadn’t seen before.
The first was the new Copper Moon Gallery beside Yukon Artists at Work (YAAW) at Macrae. With the work of 35 Yukon artists displayed at YAAW and another 24 at Copper Moon, be prepared to spend a fair bit of time there. The photo below shows sculptor Bud Young with some of his work at the Copper Moon.
Next we finally got downtown to Arts Underground, drawn by a display of historic photos of “man’s best friend” in the Yukon. There’s a great deal more there, though, with the work of perhaps 15 artists on display including a special showing of Norm Matechuk’s wonderful wooden bowls. And seeing such things, my friends, is what keeps me buying lottery tickets… 🙂
